A bedroom with no closet has a way of spreading. The clothes rail fills up, the chair becomes a wardrobe, and the suitcase never quite gets unpacked. Sooner or later you decide to build something proper, and that's where the expensive mistakes start.
Built-in wardrobes are having a real comeback, and not as plain white boxes. They're painted the same colour as the walls, given fluted or cane doors, and designed to look as if they came with the house. The look is easy to fall for. The planning behind it is easy to skip.

Why most no-closet fixes go wrong
A wardrobe wall is a big, permanent commitment made in a room that's usually already tight. The common mistakes are rarely about style. They're about geometry:
Wrong wall: a wardrobe that blocks the window light, crowds the door, or leaves the bed nowhere sensible to go
Wrong depth: too shallow for hangers, or so deep it eats the walkway
Wrong doors: hinged doors that hit the bed, or sliding doors in a room that couldn't spare the extra depth they need
Wrong finish: a gap above the unit and a flat-pack edge that give away that it's a box against a wall
I learned this in a rental I managed that had no closet at all. Guests kept mentioning, politely, that they'd lived out of their suitcases. The wardrobe I eventually fitted solved it, but only after I'd drawn the room three times and ruled out the wall I'd originally chosen.
Measure the room, not just the wall
AI can't measure your room from a photo. It will happily guess, and in a tight bedroom a guess that's out by ten centimetres is the difference between a door that opens and one that doesn't. Measure once, by hand, and use those numbers in every prompt below.
Write down:
Every wall length, plus ceiling height
Window and door positions: how far each sits from the corners, and which way the room door swings
Fixed obstacles: radiators, sockets, switches, skirting boards and any sloped ceiling
Your bed: its size, and where it could realistically go

Use ChatGPT, Claude or any chat assistant. They're good at weighing trade-offs, doing arithmetic with your numbers and challenging your plan. Give them your measurements and let them do the thinking, not the seeing.
1. The wall shortlist
My bedroom has no closet and I want to build a wardrobe wall. Here's my floor plan: [paste walls, door and window positions, obstacles, bed size]. Rank each wall as a wardrobe location. For each, tell me what it costs me: natural light, bed placement, walkway space, or awkward door swings. Recommend the best two.
Good output names specific trade-offs, such as "wall C crowds the radiator." If it recommends the wall with the window without flagging it, ask it to reconsider.
2. The depth and clearance check
For my top two walls, check the space in front of a wardrobe. Assume hinged doors need about 60 cm (24 in) of depth and sliding doors about 66 cm (26 in) plus a track. With my bed placed where you suggested, how much walkway is left for each option? If I use hinged doors of [width], will they clear the bed when fully open?
This is the prompt that settles hinged versus sliding. Check the arithmetic yourself. If a door width is only a guess, the answer is only a guess too.

Hinged doors give full access but swing into your walkway. Sliding doors stay out of the way, but the wardrobe gets deeper. Check which leaves you more room.
3. The run length
Help me work out how much wardrobe length I need. Here are my counts of hanging items (short and long), folded items and shoes: [paste]. Ten of my hangers squashed together measure [X] cm. Tell me how many metres of hanging rail I need, whether a double hang helps, and how many shelf or drawer sections to add.

4. The built-in brief
I want this wardrobe to look like it was always part of the room, not a flat-pack box. My style is [describe: e.g. warm, pared-back, old house]. Translate that into specific decisions: how to handle the gap to the ceiling and the sides, skirting, whether to paint it the wall colour, door style (e.g. shaker, fluted, cane) and handles. Then give me search terms I can use to find each piece.
Good output is a list of decisions, not a mood board. Don't ask it for product links; chat assistants are unreliable at real products and prices.
5. The regret check
Act as a skeptical interior designer. Review my full wardrobe plan: wall, depth, door type, length and finish [paste]. Tell me what I'll regret in a year, what I've oversized or undersized, and one thing I could simplify. Be blunt.
It's the shortest prompt and often the most valuable. One honest "that wall will make the room feel like a corridor" beats any amount of reassurance.

What can I use instead of a closet in a bedroom?

How deep should a built-in wardrobe be?
